I owned this book years ago, then (too generously) gave it to a knitting friend. I found that I missed it and needed to find another copy. It's got great methods for creating a variety of beautiful hats, which turn out this size you expect and fit everyone well.

I really like the simplicity of the instruction. It is great to have a book that is so easy to follow. The hats are marvellous and every time I wear one, I receive lots of compliments. If you want a cool book of fun hats this is it!

I purchased this book some time ago, but only recently tried to make a hat from one of the patterns. I agree with other reviewers: there are entirely too many "mistakes" in this book. Either it was a very poor editing job or very poor writing and rushed to production. Check the errata before you try to knit any of the patterns as most have mistakes and corrections which you need to get from the author's website (not the publisher). I have now knit 2 of the patterns, including the cover hat and the hats are stylish and relatively easy knitting. Also check the sizing--I'm not sure her measurement of "medium" is accurate for all the patterns.

Since I've made several hats from this book I thought it was time to write a review. Many reviewers have remarked on the number of errata and I agree it is discouraging to have so many errors in one pattern book. But I have to say I've never seen such a nice assortment of styles in a single hat book, and with the errata sheet in hand all are doable for just about all knitters (although I would suggest starting with a basic style to get the hang of the various techniques indicative to hats, before trying one of the more elaborate designs). All of the other hat books I've seen (I own most of them) feature either very basic hats in a variety of colors and yarn choices to embarrassingly silly hats I wouldn't ask my worst enemy to wear. Hip Knit Hats includes a truly wide range of styles - nearly all of which I like well enough to wear myself or give as a gift - and all show at least one variation so you can see how changing the yarn or some other detail affects the final outcome.

Been looking at a lot of hat books lately - bought more than I care to admit - and have to say this is the best I've come across. Most importantly these hats actually fit me! I have a slightly larger than average head, so the fact that the hats all come in two sizes has been really useful. Usually hats look a bit skimpy on me, but the large size just gives me the extra room I need. The hat construction is fairly straightforward, though you do need to know your way around double-pointed needles. I think all the hats are knitted in the round. I hadn't used them before, but was inspired to give it a go with the aid of the book instructions. No seams, hurray!Yes, the book is a US publication, but the idea is to make up your own yarn mixtures and work to the gauge rather than try to recreate the designs with exactly the same yarn - loads of room for mixing and matching stuff from your stash. The book has plenty of pictures of the hats in different yarns to use as inspiration. The styles are all very wearable - no plain silly jester hats - but something suitable for all ages that can be funked up or dressed down accordingly. In all, a really inspiring collection. Finally, I haven't come across any mistakes in the patterns myself, but the author has addressed any errors on her website, which is reassuring.

I agree this may not be a book for absolute beginning knitters, although I thought the designs were fairly simple. Knitting in the round can be tricky, and the cast-on technique recommended for most of the hats is difficult even for me. Re: the errors in the instructions, fortunately, the edition I bought had all the corrections, so the hats worked up accurately. But as an experienced knitter who still has problems following patterns (just what KIND of "make one" did the designer mean??), I found the directions for the two hats I've knitted (VALERY, the one on the cover and DUNCAN) simple and easy to follow. I've made both hats several times. They knit up quickly, they look just as good as the photos in the book, and they fit beautifully. In fact, the first time I tried on my finished "Valery" hat, my daughter exclaimed, "It looks just like the hat in the book!" With these two hats, I found I could almost follow the pattern by looking at the photograph, they were so intuitive. After a long hiatus from knitting, I needed to make a hat for a friend. I searched high and low for weeks for hat patterns that were simple, quick and beautiful. I was surprised at the dearth of easy-to-follow yet attractive patterns. This book was the only one that had several simple yet lovely hats, with no silly "things" on them. It features designs that don't rely on a bunch of faddish novelty yarns, yet offers enough variations and color choices to keep me knitting and knitting and knitting. I've already made and given away four of the hats in the book, and every recipient has LOVED them.I love the simple guide that showed me how to combine various weight yarns to get the gauges noted in the patterns.I love the variations suggested, in yarns, colors, patterns. I love that the gauge was provided for each yarn, so I didn't have to track down a specific yarn to make a substitution.I love that the book itself is beautifully photographed, with lots of good images of the finished hat, and images of hats in alternative yarns and colors. The "Duncan" hat is so simple, and I can't wait to try the designer's suggestion to experiment with different patterns and textures on the brim.I admit I didn't like how the start of the hat looked with my usual two-strand cast-on--a bit too bulky to lie flat on top. I might still be doing it wrong! I ended up unraveling that first row when I finished, and simply sewing it up with the yarn end. It looks fine this way.Again, perhaps not a beginner book, with the difficult cast-on and 4-needle technique. But a breath of fresh air for knitters with moderate skills who want something simple yet different AND attractive.

After searching for ages for a really good hat pattern book, I finally found it. This is packed with really wearable good hats. Some of the patterns are quite fancy, whilst others are just good solid beanies with variations suggested. The patterns come in medium and large, and there is a page at the front which helps with giving you combinatins of yarn to produce the same result at the end. Allows for creativity and I would highly recommend this book.

I love, love, love this book! I'm a hat person and a voracious knit person. I buy lots of knitting books almost all of them from Amazon. The customer reviews are what I base my buying decisions on. I've been disappointed with some purchases in the past but not this one. Having ended up with several costly mistakes knitting hats from the bottom up, (i've got several expensive wash rags now) I tuned into the top down method in this book. It's much easier to fit the hat, you keep trying it on until it covers your ears or whenever it looks right. It took me awhile to get the hang of the double pointed needles but I think I got it. And these patterns are so cool! I've knitted the hat on the cover in several different variations, I think I'm addicted. Great pictures, funky designs, easy directions, what more could you ask for?
