I purchased this timer in January of 2017 to control an exterior lighted address. It has a ton of start time and day of the week options. I like the option of the having the lights on at a certain time during the week and at different times during the weekend. It was easy to install and relatively easy to program. I purchased it for a few critical reasons; It has a five year warranty which more than other similar timers, and the fact that its partially battery operated which means I could potentially have a less crowded electrical box. Due to the battery taking place of the white common wire, in tight electrical boxes, this could be critical. Intermatic says the battery should last two years which is pretty good. The device worked flawlessly for over 18 months when my wife noticed the outside address lights weren't illuminated. In checking the timer, I noticed when I pushed the on button, it would not give off that distinctive "click" of the relay engaging. I knew my wiring was correct so I checked the battery which was fine. Additionally, the display was still working which also made me doubt it was the battery.I contacted Intermatic and received a reply the next morning. They require you to show proof of purchase (obviously), so I sent them my amazon order information which was sufficient. Within a few days, I received an email shipping notice and a few days later the new EI600 arrived via UPS. I installed it which only took a few minutes since it was simply replacing an existing unit. The lights are working fine again:). No doubt it was a faulty unit but I give them 5 stars for standing behind their product, an easy warranty claim and fast replacement. I feel comfortable ordering from them again.

IMHO, the negative remarks about this switch are highly exaggerated. One reviewer said, "The programming documentation misled me . . ." but then he proceeds to reveal that he added his own stuff to the instructions: "There are 40 program settings so I ASSUMED each included both an On and an Off . . .."The instructions clearly say, "Each ON and each OFF setting will use a different numbered program." But here's the thing. I read that review PLUS the reviewer's (perhaps unintended) confession that he got in the way of the words in the instructions. So when the switch arrived I was already prepared to avoid the mistake the reviewer made.FACT: if you simply read the instructions calmly . . .relax and don't try to have it all figured out in five seconds, it's really EASY. I prepared for this installation by buying this . The wall plate is both oversized and unbreakable, so I wasn't worried about the precision of the fit.If you've ever owned any time gadgets before, this one is a breeze. There's an initial setup process for time and location. Once you've let the timer know what time it is and your general location in the US (they give you a map), you're free to program ON times and OFF times. Having read some of the reviews, I was shocked at how easy it was. I kept looking for the hard part but couldn't find it.I bought this switch because I originally bought two of these: . The bulbs work great but one of them is located under an awning by the front door and doesn't receive as much light.I'm an early riser, so every morning I would see that the distant garage light had turned off. But the light by the front door was still on. Even though these lights are cheaper to run than incandescents, the idea of paying for electricity that didn't need to be used got to me. So I bought this switch in order to turn off the entry light at sunrise. Now purely from a financial standpoint, it's probably not the best calculation. After all, I'm going to have to save a LOT of electricity to pay for the cost of this switch. But there's something satisfying about preventing the utility company from receiving any more of my money than they need to, that justifies the purchase for me.You'll have to find your own reasons. But don't let it be because of the claims that this switch requires a genius to work it. I'm pretty dumb and yet I found the whole thing pretty darn easy!

I bought this for my outside house lights to replace an old and basic Intermatic that required a minimum 40 watt load. I needed one that would work with LEDs as that would save some money over the long term. This has the combination of features I need and more. It's attractive and fits in a backplate with a standard cutout for GFI switches etc. Mine is ganged with two other light switches but it was easy to find the right combination plate on Amazon. I bought a second one to program plant lights for when the plants come inside in the winter. The programming documentation misled me, and if you misread it you are sunk. Before installing, I wanted to be sure I could program it but had tried every week or so and failed. Today, I worked out what was wrong and now it's easy and makes a lot more sense. The documentation says "Programs are created in two procedures: setting an ON time followed by an OFF time." There are 40 program settings so I assumed each included both an On and an Off, and that the Skip applied to the pair. Not so! The 40 settings are completely independent and each can be either an ON, and OFF, or a SKIP. That makes more sense too. But for weeks, I would set program 01 ON time and then set the program 01 OFF time and naturally it didn't work. Once the wrong model is stuck in your head it is hard to get the right one in. Now that I know, it is quite simple. There's nothing to prevent you from having one program for ON and two others for OFF at different times for example. Then you can switch either of them to SKIP if you want to flip between them. Again, they are independent. It's also hard to remember which is 12am and which is 12pm, so I usually just click back a minute before to see what it shows. It would be nice if the switch was a bit thinner. It is a very tight fit in older electrical boxes found in older homes. Luckily, if there are regular switches on either side it gives a bit more space. The manual ON/OFF switch presses so easily that when you open the flap to program, it easily turns the switch on or off. That's just a slight nuisance and I've got used to doing it carefully with my finger nail.Bottom line is that it provides great features at a good price and works very well once you get used to it.
