While the screws I used didn't have to have a starter hole I like to be able to prevent pressure on the wood. This drill bit went all the way through the landscaping timber easily and worked for the entire job. 40 timbers 4 holes per timber. very pleased with the product.

It is one size smaller that I want, but that is my mistake. Quality is good.

This drill performs really well cutting 4" deep holes in my septic tank that has a high ratio of small aggregate to concrete. I am using a Skil 1/2" hammer drill to drive it and it takes a couple of minutes per hole. I had planned to use the screw drive adapter that is compatible with this drill bit to drive the TAP screws into the concrete but, in my case, the screws require an impact driver to seat them.

I am a huge fan of Irwin's line of impact performance series power bits and drill bits. They are very well made, durable, and precise. These are no different...with a heavy, solid feel to them they are made to last and stay sharp after multiple uses. Much better than those cheap bits that come with the masonry screws. The 1/4" hex shank allows it it to be used in an impact which means you don't need to lug a drill and impact around the job site. Drill the hole with the impact, put you 5/16 nut setter in the impact or if you have the attachment slide it over this bit and tighten the screw.....fantastic
