What is Aeration?

Lawns are notorious for becoming compacted over time. The dense matting of grass as well as constant foot traffic cause soil to become dense, making it harder for air, nutrients, and water to reach the roots of your lawn. Aeration is one way to solve this problem. By punching little holes into the soil, you're giving roots access to the essential resources they need (water, air, nutrition).

How to Aerate Your Lawn

If you're set on aerating your lawn, there are a few tips to help you do it correctly:

Make sure your soil is moist. Aerating a lawn that is dry will make your job a lot harder, as the force required to pull out the plugs is much greater in dry soil. Wait until after a rain or a sprinkler run to aerate.

Allow your soil plugs to dry, then break them down. It’s not necessary to manually break down your soil plugs, but it does help speed up the process. You can run a rake over them to break them down.

Run over your lawn more than once. Most aeration machines or manual aerators don’t cover much surface area, so it’s a good idea to run over each section more than once for full coverage.

Continue to care for your lawn. Aeration doesn't solve everything — you still need to mow, fertilize, water, and care for your lawn.

I bought this item in June 2024, but I did not use it until today (4/12/2025). As I started using it today, it worked well, and I was pleased with it. However, the longer I used it, I began to have problems. I had to repeatedly tighten the nuts on the four screws because they kept coming loose. So, I took the nuts off and put on lock-washers. That allowed me to go longer without having to stop and tighten the nuts, but it didn't completely solve the problem. I noticed that the bottom 10" of the device began to try to bend as I put my foot down to drive it into the ground. Tightening the nuts helped to some degree. THEN, after about 2 hours of use today, the handle down near the prongs broke completely in two!!! That was unfixable!! The metal is thin and cheap, and this is worthless. I tried to find a way to contact Hersche, but there is no trace of it anywhere. I tried to contact the Amazon customer service to find out how to contact the company, but that is an exercise in futility. I strongly suggest that you not buy this product based on my experience today.

Product idea is great, but the tool didn’t last too long. Before it broke.

Feels sturdy. I like that it does some aeration and some coring. Obviously you are not going to cover much area by doing10 inches at a time. Works fine for small spots. The coring pegs do fill with dirt that is difficult and annoying to remove. If I tried to use it for a long time to cover more area, I would definitely get a bruise on my knee from hitting the handle. Works great for small areas and is easy to use, but certainly not perfect

Cheaper than most of the competition but it’s not that well made. For most of the time but it’ll bend if you see rocky or compacted soil.So fine for the price but definitely not great
