Safeguard Model 52818 Live Cage Trap Rear Release 18" x 5" x 5" for squirrels, rats, muskrats Safeguard Traps provide you with a safe way to 'catch and release' that unwanted critter from your property. It's the humane solution. There are many different sizes of our standard box traps... Just choose the one that best suits the type of animal you are trying to safely trap. Then choose whether you'd like a front or rear release trap to set the critter free in its natural environment.

This is a beautifully made trap. I was very attracted to the back end access for setting and cleaning, and was looking for a trap to fit on shelving with limited overhead clearance. As other people stated, the trap action is stiff. The metal rods that operate the hook that springs the trap are heavy and articulate stiffly. The crimps that hold the rod to the cage are snug. The result is that small animal actions do not set off the trap, even when the hook is barely engaged. It's a rat feeder, not a trap. The trap is the right size for rats, but a light animal just doesn't set it off because the action is too stiff. Wish they would address this, as it's otherwise the trap of my dreams. Returned it. I don't think putting weights on the pan (as other people stated) will help the crimps being snug and the action stiff.

Easy to set, and VERY easy to release! I'm so glad I opted for the quick release in the back, so that I could keep my fingers away from angry squirrels! (Whithout the back opening it would be a pain in the butt to release whatever you catch!)

I like having a rear access gate that makes it easy to open for servicing or emptying. Most other brands on the market are under trade mark "Havahart" with rodent door access on both ends. This makes the unit difficult to service. The biggest problem I have encountered with any outdoor ground trap is keeping coyotes, etc. from stealing the traps. If they don't damage them trying to remove rodents, they steal them to work on extraction in a more secluded location. Predators also will even chew thru securing ropes to relocate a trap and I've had to use small chain ties with clips to deter removal.

This cage was advertised to be used for catching Mice and Rats. I had an infestation of mice in my crawlspace. However, the trigger weight needed to spring the trap on this cage is apparently higher than the weight of one of my mice. Therefore, the first day I used it my bait disappeared but my trap never sprung. I thought perhaps the critter was something like a squirrel instead of a mouse and the critter could put his paw between the grid openings on the sides or top of the cage to steal the bate without entering the trap. So I put blocks along the sides and top of the cage to force the critter (whatever it was) to actually enter the cage in order to get the bait. Once again, the bait disappeared without springing the trap. I then realized that a mouse was the critter and the weight of the mouse was not enough to trigger the trap. I tried adding a few small magnets on the trap plate to supplement the weight of the mouse. That had no effect. Still bait gone but trap not sprung. I finally gave up on this approach and resorted to a modrnized version the old fashioned spring loaded kill type mouse trap. During the next two weeks I killed 7 mice. So I do not recommend this cage for catching mice. However there are other alternative methods that work. I believe this cage would work for catching larger rodents (like a Rat, Chipmunk, or squirrel).Update: 01-13-2019I made a mistake in thinking this cage was advertised for use with mice. Most poisons, kill traps etc. that I've seen on the internet aim primarily at rats and mice. I guess I did not read the Amazon.com ad for these live catch cages carefully enough. They mention Squirrels, Rats, Muskrats BUT NOT MICE. This cage is of high quality construction and I would rate it 5 stars for its intended purpose.

I bought this to clear out the over abundance of squirrels in our yard. On arrival it appeared a bit small and on the box only (smaller) red squirrels were listed. That was two weeks and six trapped squirrels (five grey) ago. After setting it once or twice (the instructions could be clearer) it takes only a few minutes to reload (squirrels love peanut butter) and set. Simple, strong and effective. The other instructions as to where and when to put it out should be followed. For instance, not wanting to trap a skunk means it comes in at night. I could not be happier.

Great trap for small animals. Used for flying squirrels in attic. These squirrels can squeeze through a one inch space. They are also very light in weight. Thus, the trap must be well built with appropriate spacing and a light trigger action to spring closed. The Safeguard 52818 does an excellent job. The rear release door works really well to let the animal out of the trap. Quality construction with simple and easy use.
