About this item

  • Sodium silicate can be used in several ceramic applications: (a) it is used to prevent lumping when slip casting; (b) it can be used to create a crackled texture on ceramic surfaces; and (c) it also reduces viscosity and water needs in pottery and ceramics.
  • Using it as a Deffloculant: Penguin Pottery's Sodium Silicate Solution is used to deflocculate (ie. prevent lumping) casting slips. Our sodium silicate causes the particles of clay to repel one another and remain suspended. Please note that, over time, plaster will absorb the solution and will deteriorate / erode.
  • Using it to Achieve a Crackled Surface: If you want to achieve a super-interesting crackled clay surface, you can apply Penguin Pottery sodium silicate to your piece right after you finish throwing (before you fire it). Just apply with a brush, wait until it dries, and the place your hands inside the piece and expand the sides.
  • This solution is water-soluble and is made with soda and silica. Please note that sodium silicate will be damaged if frozen (eg. shipping during winter months)

I bought this item because I was gifted a bunch of clay and I was interested in slipcasting. It worked great and even two years later.

I do not throw.. I hand build and was told this wouldn’t work for hand building… challenge accepted! It works best with very fresh and supply clay.. I make the basic shape I want.. paint it on, let it dry and then with a wooden tool start pushing out from the inside… just one pass at a time.. little by little. I was also told that you couldn’t touch it once it had been painted on.. I find this not to be true at all. Maybe if I mixed it with slip that would be the case, but painted on directly I can safely handle the pot as I manipulate it. It does, of course, dry the clay, which makes pushing a lot more tiring, but slowly and consistently makes for some very nice results.

DON'T let this stuff get mixed into your reclaimed clay, and DON'T let it harden on your wheel or anywhere else before you clean it up. You can get sodium silicate by the gallon way cheaper online or at your local hardware store, but who needs that much; a pint will probably last you well past the point where you get sick and tired of working with it and go on to other things.

Nice that the container has a seal over it so it won’t leak in shipping.

I had been wanting to try the Sodium Silicate crackling on my pottery. Searched Amazon thinking it was the easiest way to get it. And here I found it with Penguin Pottery! Delivery was very fast! This product was easy to use. I did watch several Youtube videos prior to use though. Product was tightly sealed with a white label like sticker to prevent any spillage, which comforts me knowing for future purchases. I will have to note, I tried to purchase this product a few weeks prior and was given a notice that it was no delivery to my area. But I tried later and the purchase went through. Yippy! I am excited to use this product more in the future!

Container busted in shipping. I feel like it should be sealed with more than tape on the outside. the container leaks if its tipped over while closed. Otherwise the product is good and works as intended.
