We installed PumpSpy’s original Sump Pump Smart Outlet in 2018, so it has been in continuous use for about 7 years.LONG TERM USE REPORTThe Smart Outlet has been reliable, easy to use, and has provided actionable intel on sump pump activity that we previously lacked. For example, we now know that on an average week, our sump pump activates about 5-7 times. Sometimes it goes for days without activating. The most it has ever activated is 4 times in one day. Sometimes it doesn’t activate even once during days of heavy rain. So based on this info, we see no need to install a back up 12 volt sump pump with battery. We do have solar and propane-powered generators if something extraordinary occurs, the power is out, there are flood conditions, etc. But for us there isn’t much risk, which we now know thanks to the PumpSpy unit.We travel a lot, and really like being able to see what’s happening with home systems. If an emergency occurs we can reach out to someone local. PumpSpy allows this, although for security reasons their servers reject international queries . A U.S. based VPN works when traveling abroad. One clarification to emphasize….some reviewers have had issues with getting the PumpSpy app to load that are probably related to the use of a VPN. If your VPN originates in a server outside the U.S., the PumpSpy server will reject the query and the app won’t load. Turn off the VPN or switch to a VPN server in the U.S. and the app has always, 100 percent of the time, loaded for us.We use the IOS app and have never used the Android app. Installation took about five minutes with no errors or other glitches. We have Eero Mesh WIFI and Xfinity as the ISP. We have never needed to reboot the Smart Outlet, and as far as I know, the only time it has been off line has been when PumpSpy was pushing out an update. The PumpSpy app isn’t a sophisticated design, but it is easy to set up, configurable in terms of locations and device names, and allows more than one mobile number or email address to be contacted in the event of a system message or alarm. It has worked perfectly in the seven years that we’ve used it.The Smart Outlet form factor is simply better than any comparable system we’ve seen. It just plugs into an outlet, vs other similar units that need to be mounted on the wall, have a cord hanging from the unit—simply less messy than other systems. In seven years of use, the single equipment failure we had was the high water sensor—a $13 part. When it failed we called PumpSpy, had no trouble getting in touch with an expert tech support person—based in the U.S.—and had a new part on its way.USING THE SMART OUTLET IN A SEWER EJECTOR BASINWe since have had a handful of discussions with PumpSpy staff since we decided to use PumpSpy’s Smart Outlet 2.0 in our sewer ejector basin, an application that PumpSpy does not support. The only issue in using this device in a sewer pit relates to dissolved solids and the risk that the high water alarm sensor may fail to function if it gets hung up by some solid in the basin. (Every other system feature works exactly the same in a sewer ejector pit as it does in a sump pit.)To solve this we first tried to get tech specs on the high water float with the intention to swap it out for a float designed for sewer basins. We weren’t able to get those specs. So instead, we installed PumpSpy’s normal high water alarm sensor float just above the sewage intake pipe and mounted it on the opposite side of the discharge pipe. Mounted in this location and being mounted above the intake pipe dramatically reduces the risk that some solid would interfere with its function. If that doesn’t work, we’ll fabricate some sort of cage around it.But it has been working perfectly. And now we have all the data intel that Smart Outlet has already been providing on our sump pump for our sewer ejector pump as well.Photos are of the dual PumpSpy Smart Outlets in our sump and sewer ejector basins.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In every instance in talking to PumpSpy staff we received informed, professional and overall excellent advice.Obviously cost isn’t a primary consideration in choosing a smart device to manage a home system that has a critical downside risk (flooding). But the Smart Outlet is about $100 less expensive than the other comparable systems we investigated. All in all, our experience with PumpSpy’s hardware, software and technical support have all been exceptional. We trust this company’s competence and we trust their character. I’m curious why there are a handful of one-star reviews where users had difficulty installing the system and/or needing to reboot. We simply have not had either of those issues.Since this type of experience with the products and service of a small company is not necessarily the norm, I thought that I would share this information with the Amazon community.

I purchased a Moen. I spent hours after hours trying to connect to my Wi-Fi. But I couldn’t. I called the Moen customer service. They blamed my router supporting both 5G and 2.4G. They asked me to turn off 5G which I did. But that stupid thing still couldn’t connect.I returned the Moen and bought a PumpSpy. It connected to my Wi-Fi within minutes. I haven’t hook up my sump pump yet. But I expect there will be no issue.I only run sump pumps when outside is frozen. Now and in summer time, I run a Speroni Jet water pump (CAM60 ) on the patio to suck the water to a garden hose. So I can water my lawn or direct water anywhere I want.As the Speroni pump draws more power and runs longer time than a sump pump, PumpSpy would not work. I used another smart device (eMylo Smart Meter Energy Monitor) to monitor the pump run time. This setup worked quite well during past year and an international trip.Update: I hooked up my sump pump yesterday. No issue at all. very smoothly. So far I am very satisfied with the device. The only thing I don't like it is that the app stopped working when I was out of the country (I was in DR this Christmas). It defeats the purpose of the device.Hope this helps.

Relatively easy to install, and works as advertised, but relatively expensive. I have one on my main pump and one on my backup pump. Gives me peace of mind when I am away from home. Requires switching to device wifi network for setup, other devices have figured out how to connect without doing this. Would be nice to work with HomeKit.

*Updated review Jan 1 2025This continues to disappoint me. The Wi-Fi continues to come and go. And from time to time, I now receive a “power is off” alert. Ironically though in the app, the Wi-Fi shows as connected even on refresh. The bonus is below. They eliminate the cycle history past 90 days now. According to the email, this was causing them system performance issues. So instead of adding more system resources, let’s just get rid of the data. Considering life expectancy on sump and its components is based on the number of cycles, this is an important metric to keep tabs on. Now this isn’t even possible.Between the issues and eliminating of features, the value for the money continues to degrade. So what was once already expensive for what you get is now ridiculous. There are only 2 days left before we perform maintenance and implement changes to our system. Maintenance will begin at 9:00 AM on June 11, 2024.Quick Recap:Alert History: We previously communicated the app will display only the past 90 days of alert history. We are no longer planning on truncating the alert history at this time.Pump Cycle History: Historical pump cycle data that was stored on our servers will be removed to optimize system performance. The app will continue to show the recent 90 days of data.*original review*I’m on my second unit after a short period of time. The first one flaked out with the power sensor and support was fine on replacing. The second one is having issue right out of the gate all WiFi related. Once a week it disconnects from WiFi. A power cycle restores the connection again for about another week. Considering I’m not local, this isn’t the most convenient. When the product works, it seems to be ok. Otherwise the product seems fragile, low quality internals or I’m really just that unlucky.

Easy to set up and seems to be working. I am not sure how it will be able to alert me if the power goes off, since my internet would also be down at that point. The device keeps track of the pump cycling on and off so you can detect if something is wrong. It also has a water level sensor that would warn you if the water level gets high- very nice. I do wonder, though, whether it is going to be able to warn me if the power goes out- my main reason for pump failure.
