I primarily bought this in order to do 'cycle and soak' waterings in order to give our clay soil time to absorb the water applied. My previous non-wifi orbit timers were unable to do so, with limited scheduling capability for multiple waterings per day. The ability to schedule multiple, specific times, or 'cycle and soak' events via an app interface has proven to be very useful.Pros:-easy to manually toggle the water on/off on the unit with a single button press, for when you need to fill a bucket, etc. Within the app, you're able to change the default time that the unit will automatically shut the water back off. I increased ours from 15min to 30min.-The ability to do a "cycle and soak" from the app, and have the Rainpoint water for shorter periods, with pauses to let the water soak in has been very helpful for maintaining seedlings. (With one major flaw however, read below).-device tracks how many gallons has been applied. I thought this would be mostly a gimmick, but has proven to be useful as different sprinklers/hoses have had a significant effect on flow rate. The water meter lets me know how much water was applied, in addition to for how long.-The ability to turn on/off remotely via wifi app is very nice. I even find myself turning the water on from the app, just to save myself from walking back to the spigot from the end of the hose. (but I wish there was a one-button on/off, rather than having to set cycle type/duration/etc.... just a few extra unnecessary clicks to have to make.-excellent wifi reach. I was concerned that some of my spigots would be too far or through too many walls for reliable connection. But it turns out the range is even much further than I need, as I tested by walking the timer down our driveway, it still worked reliably even 250ft away.-email support is very helpful and responsive. I've had several questions that were each thoroughly answered within 24hrs.Cons/room for improvement:-The device cannot run two zones at once. This means if a sprinkler is running, you cannot use the other zone to fill a bucket or something.-Not only that, but if in a "cycle and soak" routine, the zone is considered "in-use" even during the soak(off) periods. If zone one alternates watering for 5 minutes, and soaking for 30 minutes over the course of 4 hours, I cannot use zone 2 at any point during that time, as it gives me a "zone 1 is currently in use" error. This was particularly problematic when I want to get in two zones worth of watering in the early morning hours. But in order to do so, would need to alternate zones. The only solution, at the advice of customer support, was to schedule a dozen shorter 'standard' waterings.-I have half an acre of grass and gardens to water using 2 spigots and 4 sprinklers. I have to reposition sprinklers throughout the day/week for full coverage. As such, the watering parameters are often changing based on the location of the sprinkler, if its doing 360° vs 180°, etc. As such, I wish there was a way to schedule a one-time watering. Perhaps simply a "delay until XXtime" setting under the "manual" portion of the app control, which is default to "now" but may be changed to a time within the next 24hrs or something. As it is, the only way to schedule a future watering is to create a new "plan", but that is more of a repeating, permanent sort of thing.-Their product lineup is very confusing. They have multiple 'variations' of seemingly the comparable products, many of which only work with their own hub/eco-systems of accessories, but the website does a poor job of explaining what the differences are, or what accessories are compatible with what hubs. There were at least 4 other dual-zone wifi hose timers I had to choose between, and it took an email to customer support for someone to explain that this one was the newest in their lineup, used a different hub and app, and provided higher water flow and longer wifi range (nowhere on the website does it clarify this, nor do I understand why the other units are still offered at comparable pricepoint). However, many of the other wifi accessories (rain gauges, etc) do not work with this unit's hub, which was only made apparent by asking email support. The agent I spoke with via email even told me the best way to figure out which accessories are compatible with which hub is to email and ask. A simpler lineup and/or with a better organized website and product comparison tool would've saved alot of headache in selecting a product.Tips:-see photo above, as I've made a daisy chain of accessories to make the spigot setup more durable and effective.-the Rainpoint shut-off is sudden and abrupt (like on any hose time I've used), which creates a water-hammer effect, and the 'thud' in the plumbing is noticeable. To minimize this, I added a water arrestor before the hose timer.-Our well water has mica sediment that will block the mesh filter in the Rainpoint and restricts flow after 10-20hrs of use. I replaced this filter with a 3rd party in line filter from Eden that is larger and quicker to clean. so far, so good. (note, the Eden threads required a simple modification of shortening in order to properly engage the threads on the rainpoint)-I added a strain relief before the timer, so that if tension is pulled on a hose, it does not put excessive torque on the hose timer connections themselvesAll in all, I’m much happier with the functionality these provide over my previous Orbit timers. They offer bother better ease-of-use as well as a far wider range of programmability and control.

This is the third version of these wifi connected, smart water timers from Rainpoint. As far as I can tell, the water timer itself hasn't evolved much in build materials, construction, and functions. It is made mostly from plastics in the housing, valves, and hose connections except where it hooks up to the water bib, which is brass. My oldest timer still looks fine after 2 seasons of sitting out 24/7 from spring through fall and the hose connections haven't leaked or broken. Operation is pretty much the same; you can manually press the zone 1 or 2 button to open their valve if you don't have your smartphone handy. You can only use one zone at a time. The button will flash about every 3 seconds to indicate that it's on/open. You'll hear a very audible click when opening/closing the valve.I believe the biggest changes are in the hub and the smartphone app. The hub still must use 2.4Ghz wifi networks and you'll need to connect your smartphone to that as well, at least for initial set up. Be sure to enable that network band on your router. This hub has the greatest range as it comes with an external antenna, and I tested it with the maximum difficuly in our 3000 sqft house by placing it on the second floor at the further point from the hose bib. It maintained a reliable connection through a few interior walls and the exterior wall. The older hubs plugged directly into the outlet while this one uses a power brick and USB cable; it will need a spot on a flat surface. Fortunately, it appears this newest hub is backwards compatible with my older water timers so I don't need to use the older hubs. The great improvements is in the smartphone app, which started as very basic and limited in its functions. The app has always been reliable, never crashing or failing to operate the timers. The user interface has become much more intuitive and logical with intelligent features such as adjusting the water time/quantity based on the month and skipping in case there is a heavy rainfall in the forecast. Watering can be done based on duration or quantity of water as the water timers have a flow meter to calculate the amount of water used. And when and how watering is done can be fine tuned, such as normal (constantly on), interval (turning the valves on/off periodically), or cycle/soak (split the total time into short cycles so water can seep into the ground). The app will also track the watering events (day, time, and quantity) as well as display it graphically. The only odd thing is that the Rainpoint software doesn't just update the older versions; at one time, I think I had 3 different versions of their smartphone apps to control a variety of their water timers as I kept reinstalling the software as I received the timers. I think I can remove all the older versions as this one seems reverse compatible with them all, except the one that is connected via bluetooth (different series of water timer). One feature that I haven't tested yet is the moisture meter, which will help adjust the watering based on the soil moisture. This should save water and avoid overwatering and damaging the plants/grass. The manual says I can link a moisture sensor to each of the two valves.I'm very happy with these smart water timers by Rainpoint, which saves me a lot of time and aggravation of having to remember to turn on the sprinklers and more importantly to turn them back off. Of the 5 timers I've gotten, only 1 has broken (an internal valve or seal failed and flooded the electronics). Rainpoint replaced it under warranty after I sent them a video of the issue. I highly recommend these smart timers.
