After using anode rods in my camper's hot water heater, I decided to try them in my horses and goats' water tanks over the winter when a tank heater is required. The tank heaters create a lot of mineral build up/scale in the water tanks. The anodes rods work like a charm. The rod attracts the scale/minerals which then do not build up on the tank heater or inside the tank nearly as bad. My animals are not interested in messing with the rod which I just toss in the tank. I simply remove the rod when it is time to clean the tank and then replace it. I am experimenting and left the rods in the tanks this spring even though the tank heaters have been put away for the summer. I am interested to see if the rods will continue to attract the scale/minerals thus reducing the amount of build up on the inside of the water tank. I do not try and clean the scale build up off the rod as it is doing its job collecting it in the first place. My vet gave me a thumbs up on using the rods in the tanks as my large animals need magnesium in their diet and the rods contain magnesium.
