Cal-Van 164 SAE In Line Flaring Tool Set

Wow. I bought a similar kit some years ago and have been very impressed with it. I bought this one thinking it would be if similar quality. I was so wrong. First off, I ordered it specifically to do double flares on 1/4" brake line. The kit came with a 3/16" and two 5/16" flaring adapters and no 1/4" adapter. Quality control throughout was just as sad. The clamps let the lines slide rather than flaring them. After one successful flare on 3/16" line, the clamp would no longer tighten sufficiently to thread on the flaring collar. Very disappointed. My original kit cost less than $8, and it has worked flawlessly on dozens of flaring jobs. This was a total waste of time and money.

This tool failed right out of the shoot. It slips on copper nickel tube. So I employed an old wood workers trick. Wrap the tube with fine grit wet/dry paper (grit against the work) the clamp will get enough of a bite.

Works like a champ. I replaced the hex screws with 1/4 grade 5 bolts, lock washers, and soak all components in sewing machine oil prior to use. I chased all threads a few times as well. Perfect flares each time. No complaints. Finished two complete brakes lines in a hour.

Compact kit that works very well, and can even be used on the car in tight places. It would be great if the developed a handle to make that even easier. Visegrip works great though, when a bench vise is not available. Well worth the cost. Very nicely engineered.

Makes the best double flare I have ever done. A little hard to hold and use 2 wrenches at the same time while flaring on vehicle. Threads are starting to wear after 10 flares. Probably won't make many more before striping. Still save money even if I replace the next size only.

Tool worked fantastic was able to perform a abs delete on my vehicle with the engine in it, worked great in the tight limted space i had, only trick to the tool is have it really tight when you do the allens on the one that clamps the line otherwise it will slip thru

This is the right kind of design for a brake flare tool. It's much better than the standard cheap-o clampy thing. However, this one could stand to use some better metal. The little stem on the adapter misaligned and bent the second time I used it, which is just bad design, and the conical bolt developed a groove on the cone surface. It eventually got the job done, but would have been much better if it used stronger steel.

I find this tool much easier to use that the standard barwing nut type. I was able to do 1/4" flares on the vehicle very easily. So why did I change my review to 1 star? The first 3/16" flare I tried to do stripped the clamping block teeth and would not hold the line in place. On closer inspection, I found the 5/16" clamp teeth looked the same. My conclusion is these two clamping blocks were not machined correctly at the factory. These two clamps also look very different than the 1/4" clamp. I have contacted Cal-Van a couple of times about this and have not received any kind of reply. I will never buy another Cal-Van tool again. I am happy to spend twice as much to buy Snap-on or Matco knowing they stand behind their tools. Even Harbor Freight stands by their products.
