Picked up this reel looking for a heavier duty reel to match the large river and bay fish. It functions really smoothly, looks to be of high quality construction and finish all around. All the materials weigh about what you'd expect for a stainless saltwater-capable reel. Build quality is robust, looks and feels good. This reel after having a couple of sessions out on the water leaves an impression of really good value and capability for the 20-40 lb range of fish.

This is a good quality inexpensive reel. Very well finished and smooth. I haven't used it enough to comment on the longevity. That said it is a huge reel, much bigger than I need for surfcasting (for striped bass, bluefish, etc.)

Although this is a review of a free product, I give you my word that my reviews will always be unbiased and truthful.I put this on one of my 10 foot surf rods and have been out with it several times this last week or two. I really, really like this reel. The aluminum spool holds a lot of line. The ball bearings make reeling in nice and smooth. The drag works well, and adjusts easily. The body is pretty lightweight for it's size. It is not plastic, but graphite. I have landed 2 nice sized King Salmon with this set up this last week. For the price, it's a bargain. I will leave this reel on this rod, and will probably use this as my "go to" combo.

Actually, although the description on the Amazon page is accurate, this reel is even bigger than I was expecting. In many areas, heavy-tackle surf fishing is a sport wherein large baits are taken WAY out, sometimes even by a partner in a kayak or by a drone. Those guys are usually fishing for big sharks, and the size and line capacity of this reel would be appropriate for that application. If you're looking for something for inshore or near-shore fishing, this is probably bigger than you would want. That's certainly not a criticism of the reel, it's just a note about its intended use.The line you would normally use on this reel is probably 40-pound test or more, but all I had on hand was 20-pound test braided line. I wound on all 320 yards of that line and--as you can see from my picture--it's still far from filling the reel. In fact, for maximum casting distance, you would want the outer diameter of the line wound on the reel to be much closer to the diameter of the top flange of the spool, but that's not a fault of this reel, it's just my fault for putting on 20-pound line instead of something more appropriate. In my experience, those who use heavy tackle for surf fishing tend to be experienced fishermen whose interests are rather specialized. They tend to use very expensive, very high-quality tackle (for example, a Daiwa Saltiga reel). This Sougayilang reel is--for the type of reel it is--not very expensive, and it seems to be of reasonable quality. The only criticism I would have of it is that the handle seems to me to be excessively long. No doubt that's to provide extra leverage, but to me, a slightly shorter handle would be preferable. If you want a back up to your normal high-end, big bucks, big-fish tackle, or if you are just trying out that kind of fishing to see if you would like to pursue it further, this would be a good starting point for the reel. It's an affordable way to have big-fish-appropriate tackle.
