If youre a luthier or tech or even if you just want to work on your own instruments then you really do need a pattern makers vice. Its worth every penny. Stew Macs version is heavy cast iron with a simple mounting system. It has soft rubber pads on the vice faces and the rotating heads can be tightened if necessary. The screw mechanism is geared perfectly and is fast enough to move heads wide or closed fairly quickly but also geared low enough to get a good tight grip on your work piece. The vice faces are easy to make if you want extras or need different versions. I have some faces Ive made specifically for holding odd pieces tightly. Four wood screws out and you can change the faces quickly and accurately. I would hightly recommend you buy the vice pads from Stewmac. They really inexpensive and work really well.

Bolted to my work bench, much better than just laying your guitar on a towel to work on.

This vice will change the way you work! Love the urethane soft jaws. Holds odd shaped things securely and will not leave a mark. Top notch design and execution, worth all the dollars.

the vise works great. it's a keeper.one of the vise's pads doesn't align (vertically) with the other. needs a shim or thrust washer to make them match up. also, the allen screws could use some lock washers. easy fix.all good here.

Extremely easy to install. I can’t believe that I have built guitars for so long without this vise.

I’m guessing I’m unlike most people who buy this vise because I bought it for woodworking and not guitar repair. I’m giving this vise 5 stars because it functions exactly the way I want it to and heck it’s a vise… not a Mercedes. The things that I’d take a star off for if they really bothered me a lot: the paint quality is poor at best, it requires drilling an 11/16th” hole instead of a 1” hole (Who has an 11/16th” bit laying around their shop? Not this guy. Quick trip to Lowes and $5 later and all is well.), the circular handle is annoyingly slippery (I’m gonna add hockey tape to mine to give it some grip). Other than that it’s a solid, versatile, super easy to install vise that holds strong and holds odd shaped things well. What more could you want in a vise?

There is a near exact copy of this vice that comes out of mainland China. It's castings are horrible - very rough. This one is made in Taiwan and has very good castings that are nice and smooth with no blow holes or wrinkles. It cost more but is really a pretty nicely made vice.

I have made a vice from a wood working vise as I have a full metal working shop but for the money and this ain''t cheap it is well worth it. I looked around and found many others but I went ahead and spent the money on it and I am REALLY glad I did.
