You can't get more basic, this is like what I'd give to a student as a starter tool that works but you have to mind it that it doesn't deform and throw off your measurements. Look elsewhere if you need a high performance tool but if you want something cheap and easy to pocket this little thing might do the trick if the price is right

This item is a compact measuring device, small enough to be easily carried in a pocket, and nicely made of brass. It can be used to get quick internal measurements of 7/32 to 4 inches, and external measurements of 0 to 4 inches (although its accuracy suffers beyond about 3 inches). It's designed to be handy for making measurements when absolute precision is not necessary. While the manufacturer's website description calls it a "sliding vernier caliper," the word "vernier" is a misrepresentation, as there is no vernier scale on this device! Such a scale would allow a more precise reading of measurements that fall between the increments marked along the length of the instrument. However, measurements made with a device like this would not have the accuracy that would make a vernier scale truly useful, so its absence is not a significant detriment. You can get a close enough measurement with this device for most simple applications, but if you need a greater degree of accuracy there are more complex (and costlier) measuring tools that can provide it.

I already have a couple of sets of digital calipers that I use with my 3D printing hobby, and they're great for times when accuracy is required, but they're too big to carry in my pocket and too fragile to toss in a toolbox. This little brass caliper is great for making quick measurements when you don't need extreme accuracy (accurate to within about a half a millimeter or about 1/32 inch), small enough to put in my pocket, and sturdy enough to survive in my toolbox. The sliding action is not the smoothest - the groove in the larger part is not machined to perfection - but I don't need perfection. This caliper is not intended for machinists, but it works well enough for my needs, and I recommend it for anyone who just needs to make quick, reasonably accurate measurements.

Works well, measurements are accurate. Easy to use, I still prefer these to digital ones. Good value.

This is a great little caliper for a tool in this price range. I’ve had calipers that are so loose you’re never sure of the measurement. This little brass measurer holds its place while still sliding smoothly. I love it. My last caliper was too loose. If this one works itself loose I’ll report back, but for now it’s great!

I would have taken off one or even two stars if I had believed this caliper had a Vernier scale, which it doesn't as others have mentioned, but I knew that when I ordered it. It's a simple, sliding scale caliper with inch and mm scales. The accuracy is close enough for simple measurements around the house. It's made of brass of decent thickness. The main body has a slit down the length that allows the two halves to be squeezed a bit during fabrication. This causes a smooth friction fit for the slider. If you need an inside or outside measurement of for instance a plumbing fixture, this caliper is more than accurate enough. It's a handy little device for your toolbox right up there with a tape measure. I'm sure I'll find plenty of uses for it.

The brass caliper I received is a nice, basic tool -- no batteries required! The slide movement is reasonably good, with a slight amount of drag at various points. Just remember that because of the way it's designed, the smallest inner diameter you can measure is about 5 mm (3/16"). The size of the tool makes it nice to stick in a shirt pocket. Functionality is good, but the markings are only etched/stamped into the rule and can be difficult to read in some light conditions.Overall, it's a handy tool for smaller measuring jobs.
