The parts came out of the case while installing the adapter, and they’re still loose, but the adapter is functioning.

This device is for connecting a VGA output computer to an HDMI input display (like a TV). With that understanding it MUST be powered via USB cable (provided) in order to work correctly. There is an optional audio cable (also provided) if you want to use TV speakers instead of computer speakers for sound (audio). Seems to work well with TV set to HD (1920x1080).
