As with most ES products, this item is way over priced. A good concept but not sure how accuratd this little plastic gizmos might be. At $9.95 I might reconsider.

A useful addition to the Vixen Polarie for times when the sky is partially obscured. If you know your latitude and the offset in your area between true and magnetic north you can reasonably accurately set up Polarie for wide angle photography even if you can't see Polaris. As with all aspects of Vixen's Polarie system this an elegant and simple solution. Obtained at a good price and delivered promptly.

without this tool the Vixen is not really adjustable (the Polarie Scope alone is only for finetuning but not for adjusting the polarstar in a dark night with lots of stars...

I was having pretty good luck positioning my Polarie with the compass that came with the unit. I thought this would make the tracking even quicker and easier. When I started using the Polar Meter my tracking and images were horrible. I thought I was doing something wrong but the more I played around with it I noticed something was not quite right. When I moved the camera closer to the compass it moved sometimes a quarter of a turn! I took it off the Polarie and moved it back and forth toward the camera. It moved the closer the camera got to the compass. This is the reason the tracking has been so bad with the Polar Meter, anything metal seems to affect the compass. I wrote a glowing review of the Vixen Polarie but I absolutely cannot recommend this. I would be curious if anyone else is having this problem.Update: Customer support from Vixen was kind enough to reply to my inquire: "Any compass is effected by it's surroundings. Your camera may have more metal in it than normal and the compass is very sensitive. We recommend that you first line up the Polarie without the camera attached for more accurate alignment. In addition due to vary magnetic fields in the earth, always the best way to sight Polarie is through the polar finder on Polarie."So keep in mind do not use this to tweak your polar setting after the camera has been mounted.Update2: (I promise this will be my last) Spent another frustrating night try to fine tune the Polar Meter, terrible result. In the mean time I had purchase a green laser pointer to help me align the camera. It got to the point I was twisting myself into a pretzel (and breaking my back) trying to figure out where the camera was pointed. The laser on top of the camera worked like a charm to show me where I was photographing the stars. I then pointed the laser at Polaris while I looked through the Polarie...no more star trails. BOTTOM LINE: purchase a green laser pointer to align the Polarie and forget about the Vixen Polar Meter.

The basic concept is good -- combine an adjustable & accurate bubble spirit level and a compass and you have the ingredients to simplify the basic polar alignment. And the idea of using the hotshoe isn't bad either. But what it comes down to is FLEXIBILITY & ACCURACY -- and that's where this Polar Meter is lacking.2.5° error on the upward angle, a scale with only 5 degree increments and slipping as you tighten the screw are big issues. And I am not sure if the compass is accurate either. It too seems to veer off course by several degrees (I am aware of the magnetic declination and have taken this into account)The other big complaint is in the design itself -- this Polar Meter will _ONLY_ fit into a camera hotshoe. No 1/4" thread (tripod thread). The foot is uneven, making it impractical to attach to something else :-(If you have a POLARIE tracker and use wide-angle lenses, these errors will only slightly impact your images. If you think this is a handy tool to screw onto a telescope mount to help with the adjustments (during daylight), you will be disappointed. At $60 it is expensive -- it it had delivered accuracy & convenience, I wouldn't have complained.

While I have not used it as yet, this meter/leveling devise appears to be very well made and will probably be a part of my alignment process when when I do my initial alignment..
