I'm not an expert - so I can't rate the quality of whittling tools against other sets, but this seems to me to be an awesome beginner's set. Feels like high end (or at least what a newbie would consider to be so) - especially with the roll up leather-like case. Great variety of tools - feel comfortable to hold (which is important, as an awkward grip could lead to accidents). Love that everything is included for a full project, to include wood and paint. The brushes could be higher quality, but we'll end up using our own anyway. This would be a cool Christmas or birthday present for a tween or teen - something to get them off the electronics and using their imagination.

I really like this kit. It is totally complete. I am a beginner and was looking for a hobby and came across this kit and knew I had to get it to try it out.The knives fit comfortably in the hand and come already sharp. I really like the leather carrying case. It is supple and well made. It definitely does what it was made to do.I would caution parents about gifting this to children, as this is not a toy. It will take someone who is cautious and respects that knives can really hurt you.Overall, this kit is worth the money that it is listed for in my opinion. It seems like it would last quite a while.I like the fact that it also comes with three templates so you can jump right in and start carving.

Really nice beginner carving set. It includes everything you need including some small blocks of wood to get started with. The directions are pretty basic, but there are lots of self-help videos online. It even includes paint, beeswax, etc. for a few small projects. The tools are in a nice, roll-out storage bag (PU leather) and seem to be of decent quality. I think this will be a really nice gift for my retired dad for Christmas.

This is a complete starter set for wood carvers. The knives and gouges are good quality- the metal is high carbon steel that takes an edge nicely. The larger tools have a comfortable wooden handle, and the smaller tools have a simple wooden dowel handle that works nicely. The roll up holder is made of PU Leather- it's a pliable but durable plastic wrapper.I needed th kit to carve linotype. It works well for this purpose. The kit includes a number of things that I won't use. The gloves are simple woven gloves with a grippy stuff on the surface. The strop is useful. There are two pieces of sandpaper backed foam- if you will be learning to carve and finish wooden figures, you will need a lot more sandpaper! But this is a good start. If you need all the parts, this offers good value for the price. I think there are less expensive options if you just need the tools. The kit includes with a nice instruction booklet. It's a good place to start.

I had high hopes for this kit, but I was sorely disappointed. While the packaging is pretty, the functionality of the blades out of the box is not. A few of the blades glide through the wood like they should, but more tore through the wood only after applying a dangerous amount of force. Many of the blades had defects in them that could cause them to catch and cause injury. The cut resistant gloves do not list their cut resistance rating and a simple single pass with one of the knives in the kit produced a hole on the first pass with almost no pressure applied to the blade. The detail blades looked as though they were plated and the plating was chipping off.The wood blocks are about average, showing saw marks, with one not being truly square. The leather on the strop is not flat and level which will result in an uneven edge, further exacerbating the problems with these knives. Like most cheap strops, it only comes with one polishing compound, and the one it comes with is for the rough side of the leather, there is no polishing compound for the smooth side. The beeswax is okay, with no lingering aroma or taste. The acrylic paints can be a bit difficult to open, but are vibrant in their colors. The paint brushes are garbage and will only last for one or two uses. The sanding sponges are nice, but offer no indication of what grit they are.The templates are fine.
