This is a great little item for crafter, knitters, crochet, and many more. Any yarn/string that fits the slot in the base. Once that is secured, you just need to keep turning the wheel. The only negative that I've seen while using it is that if you stop winding and don't keep tension on the unit, you'll end up with loops that drop around the shift that you'll need to unwind to.All in all, it's a great little gadget to not have to hand roll your yarn balls.

Pull skeins are great...unless they're not. I've had to deal with my fair share of not being able to find the end, yarn barf in the middle of a project, etc. And then there's the situation where the pull skein worked properly but I didn't use the whole thing and was left with a floppy remnant. And then there are specialty yarns that come in hanks, which have to be wound into balls to make them usable. These are situations where a winder definitely comes in handy. This winder works well. It clamped firmly to my desk top and worked smoothly and quickly. Within a couple of minutes I had an easy-to-work-with ball of yarn. This won't do large balls - a 4 oz. skein of my favorite worsted-weight yarn from the craft store will probably make two or more balls. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. The balls this winder makes will fit better into my project go-bag and my yarn bowl. The instruction sheet included with the winder was pretty good.I have only three complaints for the manufacturer. 1 - I had to thread the yarn through the feeder like it was the eye of a needle. 2 - the winding handle is quite short. A longer handle would be a nice feature. 3 - the box it came in was flimsy, so it was crushed in shipping and can't be reused for storage. Luckily, the winder itself was not damaged.

Even though the description says it's not for thick yarn, I've been successfully making yarn cakes with chenille #5 and #6 yarns. You can make huge cakes, but you certainly can use this yarn winder for thick yarns. I find the trick is to hold the yarn while winding with a decent amount of tension in order to get a nice tight yarn cake. This is so much faster trying to wind yarn by hand. The packed arrived damaged, and re-taped, so I was a little worried about what I'd find inside the box, but it was none the worse for wear, and seems to be completely intact. I love this little yarn winder!

This is good and sturdy, it reminds me of the durable plastic that telephones are made of ("old fashioned" corded telephones like we grew up with and some of us still use). If you've ever done anything with yarn you are acquainted with the problem of masses of disorganized yarn, or a skein that tangles itself while you're trying to draw yarn from it. This yarn winder is going to be such a blessing for winding it into a nice ball and being able to pull from the center (that's key--and there's no way it's going to be like that if you hand-wind a round ball). It makes the yarn you already have from projects (or even thrift store sweaters?) that you've unraveled into the most usable format. But it's not just for a completely disorganized mass of yarn; a lot of people find it tidier and more convenient to to wind the whole (new) skein into a ball/yarn cake as a more convenient flat bottom shape to store it in, and a tidier and less tangle-prone format to work from when crocheting or knitting. And if your yarn comes in a big hank then it practically HAS to be made into a ball before almost any use.I have seen this exact yarn winder model used and it is simple and works awesome. There are tutorials for it on youtube. For the price and obvious durability of this I say get it! I would not want something electric to do a task of this kind, and it doesn't really take that long to wind a skein into a yarn cake. I think for most of us this is type to get. It's also compact, you don't need a huge "swift" (the big hinged wooden contraptions that hold an untwisted hank of yarn); the winder can be used in conjunction with one to help deal with hanks but your yarn can wind directly onto this little yarn winder.

Works exactly as it should. Securely fastens to table or workspace and makes quick work of balling yarn.

It's a yarn winder. It very successfully winds yarn with no trouble. No bells and whistles, but it doesn't need any, it just does what it says. The lower part of the clamps was too short to be properly steady on my main crafting table (has a rounded edge), but it was fine on a square-edged surface - don't really think that deserves docking a star.
