I have had more electric waffle makers over the last ten years than I care to think about. Every one of them was a massive pain to deal with, and they all have broken within a couple of years or less. It got to the point where I just gave up on making waffles at all until I got my hands on a cast iron stove top waffle maker like this one, and I'm so glad I waited for it!This waffle maker doesn't need to be plugged in, and the lack of electronic heating elements means that it won't break for seemingly no reason at all while I'm in the middle of using it. This waffle maker is also incredibly easy to clean especially compared to electric ones- a chore that put me off from making waffles many times. Separate the pieces at the hinge when its cooled, use a scrub brush under hot running water on it, and all of the leftover waffle batter just slides right off.The cast iron came decently seasoned, and though I had the urge to give it another seasoning treatment myself I held off in order to see how well this iron worked right off the bat. The waffles didn't stick at all, but I did butter between each waffle for maximum slipperiness and the best flavor. I used a box of gluten free pancake/waffle mix and this maker performed beautifully for the entire box- three batches worth.The cast iron retains and distributes heat very well, and doesn't need much time between waffles to come back up to heat on my glass top stove. I waited about two minutes, one on each side and had excellent results.This waffle maker's smaller size is easy to handle, easy to flip when needed, and the two halves separate and hook back together without issue.I really like the extras included in this set as well! Overall the pan works like any other cast iron pan would but there are a few features missing that would make it more comfortable to use. First opening and closing the pan is a little bit of a hassle as it gets stuck kind of halfway opened and you have to jiggle it to get it to fully open. Second I wish there was a way to secure the top to the bottom so that when you do fully open it it doesn't accidentally come apart when you're trying to use it. The handles are pretty short which means your hands have to get a lot closer to your heat source. I'll have to use grilling gloves while using this or I'll have to find silicone sleeves to go over the handles. It's nice that it came with the grate to go under the pan and the tools they included are also pretty helpful. The basting brush will be useful for greasing the cast iron before putting your waffle batter in and the tongs are useful for getting the waffle out of the pan once it's done. I already have a basting brush and a pair of tongs so I think that it would have been much more helpful to include silicone handle sleeves. Evaluating this item for what it is, how it functions, and the tools that came with it I think it's a decent value for the cost. Its a no frills basic cast iron that heats evenly and makes a great waffle.

I was really conflicted on what to rate this as I love cooking with cast iron, BUT, the finish on this waffle iron is so rough! Anyone that uses cast iron knows that you want to have a very, very smooth finish to create an effective non-stick effect. Unfortunately, I experienced quite a bit of sticking while I got used to this. I’m not sure yet if I will bother with the painstakingly slow process of attempting to sand down the finish… probably just better off buying a vintage waffle iron if you have the money. But then, this is pretty cheap, so what can you expect? And at least it does not have a non-stick coating. The extras in the set are nice - everything that you need to make lots of yummy waffles - except for the slick finish! Have fun cleaning this after your waffle endeavors - I sure didn’t LOL

After having bad luck with cheap, electric waffle makers that lost their "non-stick" surfaces within weeks, I decided to get something more durable. This will last a lifetime! I loved all the necessary accessories being included in this kit, which made it an even better value. And I like that it's a healthier, more non-toxic option than the so-called "non-stick" surfaces.It is expectedly heavy and takes a little bit of an adjustment. I do wish their included recipe book would have included specific times for cooking on an electric stove top. But this is definitely a waffle maker that will last and won't need to be replaced in a matter of weeks or months.
