This product is a switch designed for use with a top-post battery used in automotive, truck, marine, industrial, and farming applications. It is designed to be inserted between the negative top post terminal and the negative cable. The switch has one battery-cable-type connection and one battery-post-type connection. In between the two connection is a rotary single pole single throw switch. The idea behind the switch is to be able to disconnect the battery from the electrical system, by interrupting the negative connection, and therefore preventing a continuous drain on the vehicles battery. The continuous drain on the battery often comes from the various computer systems, alarms, monitors, and even clocks, all of which require power from the battery to continue to operate over time. Generally, this continuous, low-level power usage is termed parasitic current draw, but that term is not used universally.I ordered this product because I have a pick-up truck that I do not use very often and the battery will often drain to the point that starting is difficult. I do not like to have to provide a jump start so I have been disconnecting the negative battery cable. This works great but it is a pain in the posterior to have to connect the cable when ever I need to use the truck. This product will make the process to reconnect the battery a matter of opening the hood, turning the switch, and then closing the hood.I like this product and I was surprised to see that the metal conductor was made by a metal injection molding process. Additionally, I really expected the metal conductor to be heavier (thicker) but I do not know yet if this is an issue. The Amazon page states that the conductor is made of “Copper” and “Pure Copper” but the color of the material makes me wonder if it is not made from a brass formulation which obviously contains a large percentage of copper. The color of the conductor simply does not look like it is made of 100% copper. Nevertheless, I will be installing this product in my truck and giving it a try.
