This is much easier then doing it by hand and the tool cuts well. I am not sure how helpful the gloves really are but it was a nice extra. It should be screwed or clamped into place. This is a solid piece of gear to have if you are serious about your leatherwork.

Excellent little splitter/skiver, especially for the price. it is sturdy and has a sleek small footprint. It comes with several additional items including extra blades and protective gloves. The gloves fit my hands well. I actually bought this as a splitter, but I am pleased that I can skive with it too, as long as I work carefully. That is good because I dislike skiving by hand. The splitter is simple enough to set up, according to my family member who set it up for me. Since I am not technical minded, I cannot explain the technical aspects, but the instruction booklet is detailed and gives very good information on every step of the process. The blade comes pre-installed. I particularly like the leather grip clamp to hold the leather as I pull it to split the leather. It makes it easier to maintain equal tension all across the piece as I pull. I have split veg tanned leather with this with success. I have also skived the ends of thick belts for folding and that has worked well too. Of course, I needed a little practice first. But once I got the hang of it, it now goes smoothly enough that I wonder how I managed before I got this. Very pleased with this item.

I own a leather shop and ordered this leather skiver to try for smaller items. I have larger skivers but they take up bench space for the small amount of time I use them. This came with a blade already installed and a pack of extras. I did not want to put screws in my bench so I could only get one clamp on it. It cut very well and skived the end of the leather off. I left the skived end of the leather attached so you could see how it worked. I think I probably held the handle since only one side was clamped and it was slipping so that is why the very end did not come all the way off. This does a nice job of skiving and the instructions say it works up to 3 inches. Most belts or straps are 1 1/2 inches and not usually over 2 inches so there is plenty of room and it pulls through easily. This will work perfect for someone who skived straps under 3 inches. I was happy with the way it works and the adjustment was easy.

I am a novice with leather working, but am happy to have found this splitter. It seems to be perfect for the beginner in that it comes with everything you need, including the gloves and extra blades. It can be screwed into your workbench for extra leverage as well. I'm excited to have this machine, as it seems like it will grow with me as I continue to learn more about the processes of working with leather. I am hopeful it will last me a while; the price point was perfect for getting your feet wet!

This works very well. It has simplified the task of thinning strap ends which has sped up my process. The blades are very sharp and easily glide through the layers of leather. The doesn't slide around on my bench unless the blade starts getting dull. This is a must have for the small leather worker!
