This detector has a 10-year life from the date of manufacture. The one sent to me was a 7-year-old model with 3 years left.

Google no longer make these so you are getting old ones that are almost expired. Pluse thay can be very finicky about connecting to your wifi.

These devices have a life expectancy of 10 years. The ones that I received were 7 years old and thus, were only good for three years. The seller said they could not do anything about it. Beware!

I was hoping I would get at least 7 years or so. Instead I got one that's only good for 34 months. Very disappointed for the full price of $150

Something to keep in mind is that Google is no longer making these. I had a couple in my house that were approaching the end of their 10 year life cycle so I needed to order two wired replacements. The sites selling them will point out that the units being sold have reduced life left, so I knew going in that I wouldn’t get the full ten year life from the replacements. What I didn’t know was how significant of a reduced life they had. Since these two units were already six years old, I’ll only get another four years before they’ll need to be replaced too. What I’d recommend is asking the seller how old the units being sold are so you know whether the price is fair or not. I clearly overpaid for mine!

Well the product itself is awesome BUT on the web and iphone/ipod etc it's always offline!!! I had over 5 chat sessions 3 normal people and 2 seniors and still nothing always OFFLINE!!! They sent me another unit to test just incase the one I bought didn't work right, then they said that the router I had (from Bell and it's Fibreop) didn't support IPV6, I got another router at Staples that DID support it (IPV6) and again still OFFLINE!!! The alarm itself is too specific and very picky on the network it connects to. It WILL connect to the inet because the Nest company could see it there but it will not show online on the web or mobile device in any way. So I have no idea how some people here that has Nest Protect is working for them. I'm not gonna say don't buy it and this and that etc…. it MIGHT work for you OR it may not. It will work as a normal alarm at home if you don't mind not been able to get it online on the web or mobile app. So don't expect a "Plug and Play" right out of the box as so many WIFI or IP gadgets out there that are "Plug and Play".

I was a convert to the Nest Thermostat about eighteen months ago, and, totally impressed by its performance and monitoring capabilities, I decided to add more Nest products to my home.I've just installed three Nest Protects to replace three smoke detectors nearing the end of their lifespans. The five stars right now are for the ease of installation and the "looks" of the product - it's streamlined and beautiful, very unlike run-of-the-mill smoke detectors. The installation was very easy, as was the case with the Thermostat.Will report back on the performance of the Nest Protect in a few months.

Bought three of these to replace our existing interconnected smoke detectors. Installation took a whopping 15 minutes per unit and the instructions were very clear. You need to download the Nest app to your mobile device to setup the devices prior to installation. The Nest app instantly recognized our three Nest Protect devices and quickly connected them to our Wifi network.My advice for customers that have trouble connecting them to your Wifi, if your router hasn't been upgraded within the last 3-4 years, spend some money on a good router. With the dependence on Internet probably more important than a phone line, it is worth it to have a solid backbone for your network.While the product seemed expensive, I considered the 10-year life and not having to worry about whether the batteries need changing or whether the sound works on the smoke alarm. The Nest self-tests itself and keeps you alert of power outages and other issues that may affect the reliability. Also, it saves you the money of not having to buy separate carbon monoxide alarms.We also like the "night-light" feature of the device that lights your way when it is dark.

I was already an owner of the Nest thermostat and one 1st Gen Protect. Ordered a pair of 2nd Gen Protects to add to our home. Setup was easy; even simpler than the other two devices. The Protects immediately joined the other devices, and all now show up in the app and on the website. The whole suite is working beautifully together. I love Pathlight: such a great bonus feature! We set it for "always on" outside our child's room, it's a useful nightlight for trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The Protect outside our master bedroom allows us to turn out all the lights in the house and find our way into the bedroom, then goes out. Light when you need it, darkness for sleeping. I trust the alerts so much I am buying a UPS for our home router so that the Nests can alert me when anything is amiss when I am away.
