Many cats and dogs do not drink as much water as they should. By not drinking enough water, your pet's urine may become concentrated and may lead to urinary tract disease, dehydration, constipation and/or kidney disease. Cats with urinary tract or kidney disease, in particular, have a critical need for water to support kidney function and to inhibit crystal formation and other obstructions. Clean and filtered water entices pets to drink more.

When I saw they arrived dirty, one of the black pieces fell out into the water, the water turning dark with the filter and unfortunately not reading the reviews, I have opted not to use these. Waste of money in the end. Just used our home filtered water.

We have been using these filters for years for our doodle and it’s been amazing. The water is always clear and clean when you follow the directions of running water through it prior to installing it to the water dispenser. We did have to remove the spring on the dispenser because it was preventing the water from flowing often, but the filters work just as intended!

I can't believe I need to explain this but if you've removed the rubber stopper at the top of the filter, you've successfully wasted your money. The rubber stopper is called a "check valve" or non-return valve. It's sole purpose is to make sure things can flow one way but not the other; in this case, so air can flow into the reservoir, but water can't flow out of that particular hole, because THERE'S NO FILTER IN THAT HOLE! If you've removed it, you may as well just not added the filter in the first place. If you look at Tony C's picture, he shows the small plastic cap you're supposed to uncap on the reservoir lid.You may still run into an issue where it stops dispensing water even if there is water in the reservoir; this seems to be an issue with how the reservoir is oriented and where the actual dispensing hole (the rod with the spring) aligns in the bowl itself. If yours stop dispensing water while it's still full, take note of how the "Petsafe" logo is aligned on top of the reservoir. Put the reservoir into the bowl so that it's aligned opposite to what it was before (i.e. if it reads "Petsafe" rotate the reservoir so that it reads "ǝɟɐsʇǝԀ" or vice versa)As for the filter review, it's alright so far. The entire reason I bought it was because the reservoir would have fruit flies in it when I'd go to refill and it smelled horrible from all my dog's slobber getting sucked back up into it. So I mainly bought it to keep the flies and slobber out of the reservoir, rather than filtering the water itself; to which it seems to do a good job of.Hopefully this has kept some of you from following bad advice and flushing your money down the drain.Edit: As for the carbon/charcoal leaking through the filter; activated carbon is harmless when consumed. In fact, if your pet was poisoned and your brought them to a vet, the vet would probably have them ingest activated carbon/charcoal to absorb the poison. Same thing for humans. Human water filters like Brita or in-fridge water filters can/do leak carbon as well. This is why they say to dump the first several glasses of water when installing a new filter in a fridge. It's not visually pleasing, but it is practically harmless. Do a google search for "water filter leaking carbon" and see for yourself.

Does what it says it does. All the problems people are describing are due to not reading the instructions on the back of the box. There are only 3 steps. I'm not sure why this is so complicated."No water is coming through, I have to keep shaking it! OMG!" (Step 1 of instructions: open the little black cap. Water flows freely.)"There are little black particles in the water! My pet is going to die! OMG!" (Step 2, 3 of instructions: rinse the filter thoroughly to wash away loose charcoal particles. No more black particles.)I docked one star because you do need to make sure you rinse the filter thoroughly before first use. Otherwise you do get black particles during the first little while but it disappears quickly if you keep rinsing and emptying. Also, it's activated charcoal, people. A few tiny particles isn't going to hurt your pet.

I have been using this waterer and filter for several years. I like it so much that I ordered a second one to have if this one develops an issue or they stop making them. After reading some of the reviews I think I should order more as it is the best system I have found. Follow the directions and there is no problem. I wish I could remember how long I've used this, at LEAST 5 years. Do be careful to get the cap on straight, I once got an extra shower when I thought it was tight but it wasn't. Sometimes, if the water level is about 1" or less it requires a tap to flow. My dog quickly learned to do this for himself,; hearing that reminds me to fill it! So, it works and is surprisingly durable.

WARNING TO DOG OWNERS!THESE FILTERS LEAK MINUTE AMOUNTS OF CHARCOAL, WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO DETECT IN A STAINLESS STEEL WATERING PAN. I USE ONLY SPRING WATER FOR MY DOG. ABOUT THREE MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THESE FILTERS, I BEGAN TO NOTICE DARK, PATCHY SORES ON THE BACK OF MY 4 YEAR-OLD SHIH TZU MIX. THESE SORES WERE NOT NOTICEABLE UNDER HIS THICK COAT UNTIL THEY HAD FORMED HORRIBLE, DARK SCABS. I STARTED KEEPING HIS HAIR CUT DOWN VERY SHORT ANDI STARTED TREATING HIM WITH ANTIBIOTIC SPAY,ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT, AND MEDICATED PRESCRIPTION SHAMPOO. MEDICATING THE SORES STILL TOOK ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE I COULD SEE SIGNIFICANT HEALING. WHILE THE METHODS I USED TO TREAT THE SORES WERE EFFECTIVE, NOTHING I DID PREVENTED THE SORES FROM REAPPEARING, SO I TOOK HIM TO THE VET. SEVERAL MONTHS OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION AND INJECTIONS, AS THE VET KEPT TELLING ME THESE SORES WERE CASUED BY SOME TYPE OF ALLERGY AND THE SOURCE COULD BE ANY ONE OF A NUMBER OF THINGS, NO IMPROVEMENT WAS VISIBLE. THIS WENT ON FOR NEARLY A YEAR. AFTER A BLOOD TEST REVEALED NOTHING ABNORMAL WITH MY DOG'S HEALTH, I DECIDED TO GO THROUGH A PROCESS OF ILLIMINATION WHEREBY I STOPPED GIVING HIM ALL TREATS, ALL HEALTH AIDES FOR HIS JOINTS, AND ALL DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS. AFTER 2 WEEKS, THE SORE SEEMED TO BE PROLIFERATING, SO WE CHANGED THE BLUE HEALTHY WEIGHT DOG FOOD TO A PUPPY FOOD. THE SORES CONTINUED TO BREAK OUT, SO I KNEW IT WAS NOT SOMETHING HE WAS EATING. MY DOG ONLY GOES AS FAR AS MY FRONT PORCH, SO HE DOES NOT HAVE CONTACT WITH GRASS OR WEEDS. AFTER SOME SERIOUS ANXIETY, AND OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS OF VET BILLS, I DECIDED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE WATERING SYSTEM AND NOTICED WHAT APPEARED TO BE TINY SPECS OF CHARCOAL IN THE WATERING PAN. I RAN THE WATER INTO A COFFEE FILTER AND THE SPECS WERE VERY VISIBLE. I CHANGED BACK TO THE PREVIOIS WATERING SYSTEM I WAS USING,WHICH DOES NOT USE A CHARCOAL FILTER, AS IT WAS THE ONLY THING I HAD NOT YET TRIED. I ONLY BOUGHT THE NEWER ONE BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE TO REFILL IT AS OFTEN. WITHIN TWO WEEKS, I NOTICED MY DOG WAS NOT BREAKING OUT AS BADLY, BUT I WAS STILL FINDING SORES THAT WERE ALREADY OUT FOR SOME TIME. WITHIN 4 MORE WEEKS, I NOTICED THERE WERE NO NEW SORES COMING OUT AT ALL, AND THE OLDER SORES WERE HEALING QUICKER.. GRADUALLY, I BEGAN RESTORING HIS DIETARY AIDES AND EVEN RETURNED TO THE HEALTHY WEIGHT DOG FOOD, AND TOOK HIM OFF OF THE APOQUEL. THERE WERE NO NEW BREAKOUTS AND THE SORES WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY HEALED. AFTER CONSULTING THE VET, HE TOLD ME I HAD PROBABLY FOUND THE CULPRIT RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS TERRBILE BREAKOUTS.I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT NO ONE USE THIS CHARCOAL FILTER. I CONTINUE TO USE THE WATERING SYSTEM, BUT WITHOUT THE CHARCOAL FILTER AND HAVE SEEN NO BREAKOUTS ON MY DOG. I HAVE INCLUDED PHOTOS I SENT TO MY PET INSURANCE.
