I bought an old day sailor with wood coaming. It was gray and ugly wood. After sanding the wood, I started putting this varnish on. It immediately looked much much better. Made the whole boat look good.

I did alot of reading on Marine Varnish and purchased this brand. I found that it is easy to apply and is also self leveling. I applied it on a refinished boat hatch and doors. It applies easy and it is not too thick. The can states to apply four coats. I read that some apply eight coats. I have not put this into the weather yet so I will grade it this summer. I gave the durability and cleaning at a four due to not having it in the weather yet. I am sure it will hold up and clean easy. Just apply in temp no cooler that 65 degrees and it will take over eight hours to dry. If 70 degrees only eight. I applied each of the four days. I would let it harden for at least a week or two due to the number of coats. All of those coats have to dry all the way through. Brush in one direction and watch for runs if you have finished side bordering the top. Do not let the brush to go dry as you brush in one direction. It will look like glass.

First time I've used this type of product. I've included "BEFORE" and "AFTER" photos to give an idea of the color change to be expected, when applied to maple and walnut. Best results when applied in multiple light coats (avoiding the time for constant monitoring to head off any runs), light sanding in between. Couldn't be more happier with the final results.

This is my FAVORITE finish. It stays where I put it, gives great protection yet remains flexible enough to prevent cracking on outdoor projects like the canoe I built. The UV protection is out of this world.I like to apply wirh a foam roller and then lightly "tip" with a quality brush lightly dipped in Captains Varnish. Usually 1 coat is enough but a second coat is not out of the question. If you want a deeper shine a second or even third coat is all it takes. Just be sure and allow 24 hours between coats. More than 3 coats is not needed.

I used this product in my pickup truck sleeper build. It went on hard curly maple. I did a 4 step process to obtain the results I was looking for. Step 1 is dye the wood to the color I want to pull the grain out. Step 2 is to use tung oil for more depth. Step 3 is wax free shellac for a seal coat. Step 4 is varish for handling weather and heat conditions. I used a microfiber pad from walmart to apply all the coats except for the final coat. Which I used the Purdy ox hair paint brush in a warm room to get rid of the air bubbles. If you get the paint brush new make sure you use it for a few coats or on scrap wood to get the losse hair out of it. I used it and cleaned it out twice before using on my projects final coat. I posted a picture of what I used and a picture of my build. Wish I had took better photos when it was outside since the ones I have posted don't do it justice. But when looking at the wood it looks 3D when looking at the fiddleback.

I built a mahogany garage door which is hit by direct sunlight all day. I first attempted to finish it with Minwax Helmsman marine urethane. It barely lasted on season before the door needed refinishing. The next season I tried a marine urethane recommended to me by a friend. It lasted two years. Last I tried Cabot marine urethane. It lasted three years.I can't say how long this will last but judging from the thickness, hardness and gloss of the finish I expect at least four years out of this one. Will report back in 2023.
