The Sangean PR-D15 radio delivers good clean stereo sound. At high volume levels (24-30) there's some distortion, but it still sounds pretty decent.I like the AM/FM station preset buttons and how the multi-functional volume and tuning controls work smoothly and precisely. The FM digital tuner is strong and pulls in lots of stations as long as the antenna is fully extended. The tuner locks on solid to any station frequency. The AM tuner has decent sensitivity too, but the volume level sounds are quieter compared to a FM stations at the same volume level number.I had increase both the treble and bass a lot to get much better sound and voice. The radio runs on the included AC/DC wall adapter, alkaline batteries, or Ni-Mh batteries. The radio can also recharge Ni-Mh batteries. The LCD orange colored backlight provides uniform brightness and contrast across the display so the black text and numbers can be read clearly.I really like this radio, except the LCD backlight always shuts off after several seconds. The backlight should stay on in low light conditions as long as there’s information scrolling across the display. For example, when a station preset button is pushed the backlight comes to see the station frequency, but then it shuts off while song information is scrolling across the display. In my opinion, this is poor system design. So what if the backlight drains the batteries a little when running on batteries. And when running on the AC to DC adapter, the extra power drain is never an issue. The best solution is to have an optional setting saved in memory to keep the display lit all the time whenever the radio is turned on for people like me. This way, people who are satisfied (or don't care) with how the backlight works now would be satisfied.Unfortunately, even if the manufacturer was to add such an option, there’s no way I can see to update the firmware because there’s no USB port on this radio.Anyway, I tested the radio for portable use, by installing EBL brand 1.2V Ni-Mh rechargeable C batteries (I bought from Amazon). [Note: when I received the radio, the battery type switch (inside the battery compartment) was selected for alkaline batteries, so I had to switch to the Ni-Mh type position as stated in the manual]. The C batteries arrived fully charged, so I played the radio for hours and it eventually displayed a power failure warning and automatically shut off. I then connected the adapter until the radio recharged the batteries successfully(after 10+ hours). During recharging, the red LED “Charge” light on the front panel blinks on/off slowly. One thing though, recharging occurs only when the radio is off. The one advantage of using C batteries is they’re heavier making it less likely for the radio to tip over backwards while pushing a button on the front panel. Finally, despite my major disappointment with the backlight not staying on, I plan on keeping the Sangean PR-D15 radio since it delivers good sound, loud volume and has many good features for the price.

Finding a good, simple FM radio used to be relatively easy. That's no longer the case. It's even more difficult to find one that has excellent reception in "fringe" (often rural) locations like mine, in both Maine and Mississippi.Fortunately, Sangean makes exactly this sort of radio, at an exceptionally reasonable price. The PR-D15 has very good sound, the controls are easy to use; its size and thin profile make it good for tight quarters, and—above all—THE RABBIT EAR ANTENNA AND FINE-TUNING FEATURE PULL IN FM STATIONS REALLY WELL.No, the PR-D15 won' "dock" your iPad or play CDs or operate with a remote control or do your laundry. It's just a great radio, whether running via the included AC adapter or via standard alkaline or rechargeable NiCad batteries.I also wanted to run my new radio via a DC auto-style power plug/cord. I emailed Sangean and asked if this could be done, and a tech staffer kindly and quickly emailed me with an amazon.com link to just such a cord, which I bought. If I sound like a Sangean pitch man, please know that I'm not. I hadn't even heard of the brand until I ran across it during my internet search for a decent radio!

After a short and disappointing flirt with Smartphones, I found all the hype is aimed at those with money to waste. So I have gained a new appreciation for radios, still the most reliable source for entertainment that continues providing service when Smartphones just sit there and buffer, and once delivered, a radio will never cost anybody anything ever again! The Sangean PR-D15 is the upgrade to the PR-D5. Sangean fine-tuned all the components to make this radio IMHO the best AM/FM Stereo in production. I have both models, and there is very little difference in the radio's basic performance, so one looks, sounds, and works just as good as the other. And with a negligible difference in price, then the natural choice would be for the PR-D15 for anyone seriously comparing radio specs. There is a shortage of them currently, and to my surprise, one more was found and sent to me after waiting just a couple of weeks. In contrast, there is no such shortage for the PR-D5.The dinky 2.5 inch speakers emit a full and pleasing sound that is adjustable now for both treble and bass. The FM band can be switched between stereo and mono and is also passed to the earphone connector. While pursuing my original intentions to liven up an otherwise dull working environment inside a huge warehouse, I connected my new radio to a good set of self-powered extension speakers and achieved some phenomenal and gratifying results that never once cut out during the entire work day! However, that is not to say the PR-D15 doesn't show a significant amount of potency all by itself when using it around the house.Other welcomed features in the PR-D15 include:1. A much appreciated fold out carry handle.2. RDS data readout and time sync. There is much more to this service intended mostly for when traveling by car.3. The band selector also includes a third channel for use by the stereo AUX IN socket.4. AC power connection.5. 6 C rechargeable batteries can now be fully charged without removing them. There is a charging LED and a battery life indicator.6. A graduated volume control that displays current level and also serves for treble and bass adjustment.7. A bar graph that shows signal strength.8. And finally both AM & FM bands can be fine-tuned for better reception.I probably overlooked something, but there are a couple more provisions it doesn't already have:1. External antenna connectors for even better signal recognition of sources far outside the local area.2. A remote controller, or even a remote app, would be nice too.
