The docking station is great! Build quality is solid and provided cables are good. The docks chipset allows full ATA command pass through and I was able to do everything I can with E-SATA connection.

First of all the dock feels well built and quality, i was expecting it to be plastic but it is made from metal / aluminium. However that was the only area that was impressive, the dock didn't seem to function properly at all. First of all it kept assigning my drives to offline so i had to keep reinitialising them / putting them back to online in windows disk manager, i don't know if the one i received was faulty or because i was using 2x 18tb drives but either way it was not functional enough behaving in this way.Another problem i faced was that if the power to the mains was turned off or the power switch turned off on the dock, when it was turned back on i would need to remove the drives then reinsert them before the dock would start to read them which again made it not functional as simply turning the dock on should be all it needs to start the drives, removing them and reinserting them just takes time and wear / tear to the drives and dock. This could be because i was using 2x 18tb drives but Startech themselves say this dock can be used with any size drive ("Supports 2.5/3.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs of any capacity") which leads me to believe it was just a faulty one. The box these dock come in aren't great and doesn't feel secure enough mine was rattling around inside the box before i even opened it with no foam or anything in the box to secure it properly...I have bought many startech devices in the past and they are usually good quality which is why i bought this expensive one over the cheaper hard drive docks as i know them to be a good quality company (hence the only reason i still gave this 3 stars) but unfortunately i had to return this dock as it just made what should have been a a simple process, into an annoying nightmare.

Not mentioned in the item description is the fact that any time a single drive is inserted or removed, the other one will immediately unmount from your desktop, as if you had pulled the power plug on the dock. The company's description boasts boasts that you can "hot swap" drives. Following the technical definition of "hot swappable," this may be true. But to me that implies that, with two drives installed, you can unmount the second drive from the desktop and remove it from the dock independently of the operation of the other. This is crucial if you are, say, running a drive utility on a new hard drive, or copying several terrabytes of files from one external drive to an internal one. This spontaneous unmounting happens even if the remaining drive is being used, which can cause data corruption. If you never plan to remove one drive while using the other, then this unit should perform as expected. The Amazon item page for the Startech, and, I believe, also the company's website, make no mention of this behavior. You have to purchase the item and look in the fine print of the manual, where you find a warning that that the entire unit "resets" any time a single drive is inserted or removed.I've used the dual drive docking station made by OWC and it has no problem treating each drive as an independent unit. With the OWC dock, one can independently add or remove one drive while not affecting the operation of the other drive in any way. CineRAID has a dual bay dock that suffers from the same unmounting issue as the CineRAID (but that's not an issue if you only use its drive cloning feature).Removing one drive while the other remains mounted is well within the range of use any company should expect a customer might attempt, so shame on CineRAID and Startech for not simply noting in their product description that you need to unmount both drives before removing one.On the plus side, it should be noted that the CineRAID, OWC Dual Dock, and this Startech dock all support the crucial UASP protocol, which features greater transfer speed by allowing simultaneous up- and down-stream data transfers. You'll notice a big improvement if you were writing files from your computer to the drive in one bay while also copying files from the drive in the other bay to the same computer.

Contrary to the description here and on StarTech's website, this item does *not* support true hot-swapping (in the context of a specific bay). Specifically, the dock resets itself when any drive is inserted or removed. Each time the dock resets itself, all devices in the dock will disappear from the operating system, then re-appear. If an operation is ongoing on drive A while drive B is inserted/removed, the operation will be interrupted and filesystem corruption may occur. If a filesystem on drive A is mounted while drive B is inserted/removed, it may be marked as "dirty" and trigger a fsck, CHKDSK, or similar at a later point, even if drive A was idle.
