First I ordered a used one in "Good" condition – it went up in smoke as soon as I turned it on. Got a new unit and it's working better. However, I had a disk inserted in slot 2 from which I was copying data, and in the meantime inserted a disk into slot 1. This caused the disk in slot 2 to abruptly re-attach to my system which interrupted the copy. I would expect it to handle hot-swapping better. I'm get about 23 MB/sec copying from an old laptop SSD rated for 400+ MB/sec but I don't know what the bottleneck is.

The SDOCK2U313 uses an ASMedia ASM1352R chip, which is one of the best USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 to SATA chips currently available. The ASM1352R supports hardware RAID0 (Strip), RAID1 (Mirror), JBOD, and Span (BIG) but Startech states they have not made them available in this product. You will need to use software for that, no biggie. SMART, UASP, 4Kn, and TRIM are supported. The SDOCK2U313 advertises it can operate at Full Speed USB 1.0 (12Mbps), High Speed USB 2.0 (480Mbps), SuperSpeed (5Gbps), and at SuperSpeed+ (10Gbps). Having 10Gbps capability is a benefit over 5Gbps because 5Gbps only has an effective throughput of 500 MB/s and 10Gbps has an effective throughput of 1200 GB/s. SATA III has an effective throughput of 600 MB/s and can saturate 5Gbps. Essentially, a faster SATA dock will not be possible and this will be the last SATA dock you will ever need, which is nice (unless you want to dabble in SAS drives).Linux lsusb lists this device as bInterfaceProtocol = 98 and Driver=uas, which verifies that UASP can be used. The included USB 3.0 A to B cable oddly isn't Startech branded and only weighs 1.50 oz, with a diameter of 4.9 mm. A of the same length weighs 1.85 oz, with a diameter of 5.5 mm, implying better conductors and shielding. According to the Startech website, both USB cables are only rated to 5 Gbps. If you are wanting to connect this dock to a USB C or Thunderbolt port, I would recommend the or to ensure the best performance from this dock. I personally would like to see a better cable included but this one will work.Older designs of this dock had separate power buttons for each drive. This newer design only has a single power button. Makes no difference to me but if you are anal-retentive, you might not like that.FYSA: According to the manual, "When you have two drives inserted in the docking station and you remove one of the drives, the other drive temporarily disconnects as well."

I found it very useful in consolidating drives. The ability to power much larger drives is very useful. I have managed to consolidate five drives onto a new NAS. I have also reused three of those drives, saving enough money to cover the cost of the dock.I has a laptop that literally caught fire. I thought the drive was burned up. Turned out I was able to retrieve the files after scrapping the remains of the laptop. Without the dock, I am not sure I could have recovered the files

This is our second StarTech product. They all work great. USB 3.1 and 3.0 connections are very stable. StarTech quality over the last 4 years has solidified our confidence in their solutions, so we plan to continue to purchase their stuff. Our other product from StarTech was their External Drive Enclosure for 2-HDD USB 3.0 which also perform very well. This unit replaced a similar inferior product by Thermaltake Duet HDD Docking Station which kept getting disconnected and causing file system errors.

All my HDD Docking Stations are from StarTech, simply because they never fail and they never break!A quality product from a very good Brand with high Service for its Customers. They last for years, I only have to buy new ones when the Hard Disk Capacity outgrows the capacity of the Docking Station. The old Docking Station is then easily sold second hand.

This dual dock works as advertised, with super quick transfers. It doesn't look as "cheap" in person as the photos seem to show. It was one of the things that made me second guess purchasing it, but was pleasantly surprised once I did receive it. Quite solid, and doesn't transfer the vibrations of connected hard disk drives to the table as much as a previous single drive dock I had did. The power connector at the back seems a little bit flimsy, as at least one other reviewer mentioned, but I don't plan on moving this dock around much, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Ottimo prodotto.

Lightly used, works fine. StarTech always reliable.UpdateA lot of errors during copy files from hdd , Bad días image generated, I have to connect the hdd direct to PC to do the job.The hdds are ok, no bad sectors.I tried it in some computers with the same results.Bad unit, unreliable and expensive StarTech,I am disappointed that I purchased this unit.I bought a $7 enclosure Argom brand that works perfect.

The SDOCK4U33 is itself an excellent docking station. I have seen several questions about the use of the new Seagate 8TB drives. With the factory power supply providing 6.5 amps, I found I could run three at a time of the archive 8TB Seagates (ST8000AS0003) but not four at a time. Since these heavy drives draw 2 amps for spin-up I needed at least an 8 amp supply. Higher amperage 12 volt power supplies are readily available but usually the assignment of voltage to the 4-pin DIN connector does not match the Startech power supply.Startech support was helpful in discussion of the problem but did not have an answer to go above 6TB.Frustrated by this, I bought a 12.5 amp supply . The voltage assignments were wrong but I found that I just had to rotate the connector 90 degrees and smash down a little metal tab that goes into a slot. The metal tab is there to keep people from doing this very thing. Now I delivered enough current to keep four of the big Seagate 8TB drives running full tilt for days at a time. No over-heating or any other problems. Check your voltage assignments very carefully if you are going to do this. With the flat part of the connector on the bottom the two pins on the left should be +12 volts and the two on the right are 0/ground. This is sometimes written as 1+, 2-, 3+, 4- and some of the product pages show a small diagram of pin voltages as does the label on the 6.5 supply Startech provides. Now I have a pair of 16 TB shared storage drives for a total of 32TB running at the same time. The same trick should work for the Seagate 10TB drives as I have seen specs of 1.8 amps for spin-up. If I can find a spare couple of thousand dollars for a set of four 10TB drives, I will give them a try.
