If you've never fermented before, you might be surprised when you realize how easy it is to do it, especially when you have right tools. This fermentation kit is a great place to start. You have everything you need to get started in making kimchi, saurkraut, pickles, etc. The main feature are the lids that allow gases to escape your jar (and preventing damage). There are also the glass weights. This is a really nice kit... all for little batches, which is perfect for beginners who, once they catch the fever, want to try a variety of fermented products a little at a time.I saw someone comment that it was too expensive for something so simple. Well, first of all, try to find these lids with the one way valves. If you find them, they'll cost ya. If you choose not to use them, well, you'll pay for it either through time and diligence or damage. Yes, all the pieces might not necessarily add up to the price... but here's a question then: if you think this expensive but you want to start fermented, why haven't you started yet? Equipment and knowhow. This gives you both.I think the pricepoint is actually reasonable because it actually gets you going, instead of thinking about it. 5 stars!I hope you liked my review. I always try really hard to write reviews are are candid, honest, and helpful for your shopping decisions. No AI here... all the poor writing is mine and mine alone! :-P

Fermentation is so beneficial but most people are scared of starting when it really is simple. A kit like this, with good instructions, inspires confidence. I ferment all the time, and I'll be giving this kit when somebody asks me how to get started.

This fermentation kit is suited for wide mouth Mason jars, which happen to be the only style we ever purchase/use. I ferment a lot…from kefir to kvass, cabbage/beets/veggies, sodas, etc. I like the lid design in this set; they’re made of food-grade silicone and have self-release valves so no need to manually release gas from the jars, and the valves also prevent oxygen from entering the jars during the fermentation period. The lids dip down concave to provide a groove in which to collect any liquid overflow. They’re multicolored, green, purple, teal, and pink…I’d have preferred a single color for uniformity as I always label and know what I’m fermenting in each jar, but I suppose the different colors are fine for those it would help to track jar contents by lid color. The set includes 4 lids along with 4 glass weights…I like the shape of the weights with a deep groove hollowed out around the perimeter and a center tip that acts as a handle to easily grab and place/remove the weights from jars. All of my other weights are solid glass, so I found this design inventive and much easier (and less messy) to handle (these weights are also helpful with holding down multiple tea bags in my large pitcher during the steeping period when I make iced tea for the house). However the weights could stand to be heavier than they are, thinking about the larger size of my half-gallon Mason jars that I use a lot for fermenting …they’re a medium weight, likely because much of the glass has been hollowed out to accommodate the handle so to offset that, I think they should have been made thicker (and thereby heavier). I’d need to use nearly all of the 4 included in just one half-gallon jar to stop beets (for example) from floating around/over the weights to rise to the top of the jar…that wouldn’t happen if they were heavier like my other weights.Lastly, the set includes a plunger to use for pressing down veggies and such in the jar so that they’re properly compressed; the plunger is straight and quite long which is good, and it’s some sort of wood. I’ll keep it around as an extra as I already have my tried and true plungers that I like to use for compacting my veggies in the jars.Overall, I like this set as it seems to improve upon some of the older, traditional-style fermentation tools I’ve used over the years. It’s an economical price for what’s included, and it will be put to good use in my kitchen for sure!

Very expensive for ver simple item. Boxed very nice for gifting, but it was not a gift.A piece of wood, 4 silicon items and 4 pieces of glass, what’s the value to be that expensive item.

If you are using Mason wide mouth pint jar the weights do not fit in the jar.
