I bought this to transplant about 250 flower bulbs. It worked well. I read about others with a smaller 1/4" diameter shank breaking off. This unit is very robust, bites easily and ejects dirt from the hole as expected. After 250 plus holes the paint is still mostly intact.

The shank barely fits a normal drill, you have to kind of jam it in but that's ok. It works to make holes for seeds or seedlings in soft soil but itβs hard to get the material out of the hole, you would still need to scoop it out with a small tool or your finger, tried to bring it out on the auger but it just falls off. It can also make a hole in dirt, but obviously not super hard dirt, and it also has the same problem of leaving the hole full of material that you will have to scoop out. Great for aerating soil, and if your soil is moist it works quite well. Seems solidly constructed of good quality metal, it shouldnβt break in reasonably soft soil, the drill would break first. Easy to use and would save time in planting.

This auger is very sturdy and works as it should. I used it to help break up root bound bamboo in a planter, and it was very helpful.

This item makes planting much faster and easier. Main thing to remember is to keep your drill at a slow speed. Works great.

Disclosure: I got this item free as part of the Amazon Vine program, to test and review it. There's no incentives for positive or negative reviews. This is my actual opinion of the item. There are two sizes available as of this review: a 2 inch diameter in either a 9 inch or a 16 inch length. I got the 9 inches and it's plenty for me, though I'm not trying to sink fenceposts; I'm only digging holes for plants. This is a solidly-made steel auger that fits into a drill. It's coated in a hard enamel paint which resists chipping; but I did scrape some paint off the pilot tip, and the leading edges of the screw blade, when I hit a stone here and there. I wouldn't expect any material to withstand that kind of abrasion though, and the rest of the paint stood up to the testing. This thing pulls itself into the ground, and the user will have to hold on to the drill and the drill accessory handle. If your still doesn't have an accessory handle, the torque feedback can make the drill spin around and hit you or injure your hands or arms. (No need to ask how I found this out! Oops.)The holes this will dig are small, but fast, and if you need to dig a wider overall hole, I had some success drilling one or two more holes nearby but not exactly touching each other, then breaking out the soil in between to give myself a wider diameter for planting something larger. However, without doing that, the holes are still big enough to comfortably plant out annuals and started seedlings. This may or may not save your back, depending on how you use it, but it is definitely faster than digging the holes by hand. If you're careful with posture, water the soil a slightly few hours before hand to let it soften up, and use an accessory handle on the drill to get a better grip, this is a really useful digging implement. It's pretty easy to use though it requires a bit of strength and care, and it should be durable as long as you clean it off after each use, dry it, and ideally give it a little oil or nontoxic grease to exclude moisture until next use. This auger is going in my springtime planting kit for sure. I only wish I'd had one of these in 2020 and 2021 when I did a lot of gardening in hard, long-unworked soil.

This auger works great! I purchased it to make holes in a field for pole beans. We use smaller 2x2 posts, so this worked just right. I used a Ryobi one plus 1/2β cordless drill on the low setting, and it worked fantastic.
