I have had it for several years and always found the stud when I needed to hang something. Sometimes, it can be tricky to use, but I don't regret buying it for sure. It has served me well all this time.

I've had this stud finder for a couple of years now and it has found every stud that I've needed it to. I'm not trying to find studs in uncommon walls like some people are doing from what I've read. Just sheet rock panels and wood studs. I've never drilled or put a hole through a wire where the finder said there wasn't one so that part has worked well for me too.

If you understand capacitance, you can figure this thing out. Otherwise, good luck. Use a large scap of 1/2 inch wallboard and a piece of 2x4 to study how it works. The idea is this: A specific type of wallboard (with only air on the other side) provides a certain amount of capacitace. Anything else on the other side of the wallboard increases the capacitance and will be detected. The device is very sensitive. It will detect wood, metal, moisture, oil stains, plastic, wood knots, variations in plaster thickness, a 1/8 inch gap between any two surfaces, your left hand if you bring it too close, your right hand if you change your grip, etc. Calibrate it at an arbitrary location and move it horizontally, holding tight against the wall. If you get an error reading, do not move it as instructed, but recalibrate it right there. Continue to move horizontally untill no more recalibrations are necessary. Now you are ready to detect something. When you get a reading, try to figure out what you detected. If you are careful and look for vertical line-up on 16-inch centers, it is not too hard to tell a stud from everything else. The AC detection gives continuous false positives. Use common sense to avoid chopping a live wire.
